Tomatoes
Although considered a vegetable by most people, tomatoes are actually a fruit. At Dentz’s, we grow our tomatoes from seed, harvest them by hand, grade them by type, size and colour and pack them for sale at our farm market or for shipping to grocery stores. We take care to preserve the quality of the fruit from vine to consumer.
We grow round (slicing/table) tomatoes which are globe-shaped and medium-sized. Our tomatoes are ideal for eating raw–perfect on sandwiches, burgers and in salads.
Storage
Tomatoes keep best unwashed at room temperature and out of direct sunlight. It is not recommended to refrigerate as this can harm the flavour. You can freeze or can tomatoes–see Canning Tomatoes for some quick facts.
Health benefits
Tomatoes are rich in lycopene, one of the most powerful natural antioxidants. Lycopene, especially in cooked tomatoes, has been found to help prevent prostate cancer. Lycopene can also improve the skin’s ability to protect against harmful UV rays.
